Making the scene

Painting has always been a love of Carlinville artist Denise Hoff, but after marriage and children, it became a rare pleasure until 1998.
"That year we took a 20th wedding anniversary trip to Door County, Wisconsin, and my husband, Bill, had me take my painting equipment with me, and since then I have done 225 paintings," Hoff said.
Hoff, 57, is originally from Arlington, Va., but her father's job required multiple moves, and to date, Carlinville is the 26th community she has lived in.
Her family settled in Macomb, Ill., when she was in the eighth grade, and she graduated from Macomb High School in 1970. She began painting in high school, inspired by art instructor Don Heberling, now retired and living in White Hall, and continued to "dabble" in art even after she married and had their two sons.
